Compare and Contrast
Comparing and contrasting means looking at what is the same and what is different between two things or characters. Comparing is looking at what is similar, and contrasting is looking at the differences. A Venn Diagram can be used to write down and visually show comparing and contrasting.
It is important to compare and contrast different characters because it helps you think about and understand them better.
Watch this video which compares and contrasts two well known fairy tale characters.
Task: Draw a venn diagram and compare and contrast two different characters we have read about so far in Journey to the River Sea.
You might like to compare and contrast:
- Maia and Clovis
- Maia and Miss Minton
- Miss Minton and Miss Emily
- Maia's friends from the boarding school
- The Goodleys
Remember, it can be any of the characters you wish from Journey to the River Sea.
Venn diagram example:
You may draw your venn diagram yourself (it might be helpful to use a stencil like a bowl or saucepan), or you can use a website like https://www.classtools.net/Venn/
You may either:
- draw your venn diagram in pen/pencil and send me a photo of your work or
- create the venn diagram using an app or digital document and send it to me in an email
Please send your work to email@example.com

Hands on Activity - Wash the Dishes or Load/Unload the Dishwasher
It is important to know how to clean dishes after you use them because
- germs on dirty dishes can spread around your home
- having a clean and tidy kitchen makes you feel more comfortable and happy
- when the kitchen bench is clear of dirty dishes, you have more space to use and
- cleaning your own dishes makes you more independent
If you wash the dishes in the sink in your house, watch this video to learn how to clean the dishes yourself:
If you wash the dishes in the dishwasher in your house, watch this video to learn how to load and unload the dishwasher yourself:
Task: Clean the dishes or load/unload the dishwasher in your house. It might be difficult to get it right if this is your first time but, don't worry, each time you practise you will get better and quicker at doing it yourself.
If you like, you can send me a video or photo of you cleaning the dishes at firstname.lastname@example.org I will post the photos in the new Independent Champions section of our Year 4 weekly page.
Challenge Task: Make your own fun instructional video (just like the ones above) teaching other kids how to clean the dishes!
If you like, you can send me your instructional video at email@example.com I will post some of them in the new Independent Champions section of our Year 4 weekly page.
