 Grammar - Proper Nouns

Proper nouns always need to begin with a capital letter. They are the SPECIFIC names of people, places, days of the week (or special holidays) and things.

Watch the video below to revise what we know about proper nouns.

Task: Rewrite the sentences below correctly by using a capital letter for all of the proper nouns. They become more difficult as you work your way through the list so just complete as many as you can.

1. The boy who helped maia when she was lost and hurt in the forest is called finn.

2. Finn is hiding away in a hut built in a beautiful, secret part of the amazon rainforest.

3. The two men wearing dark suits, called the crows, are searching all over manaus for finn because they say he is wanted in london.

4. Finn's father, bernard traverner, encouraged him to continue practising latin.

5.  In this chapter, maia learns that it was finn who was singing the song blow the wind southerly near the carters' house on her first night.

6. Finn plans to use his boat, the arabella, to travel along the secret rivers and find the xanti, which is his mother's tribe.

Hands on Activity - Make a Salad

The weather is getting warmer as we are now a few weeks into summer. On very hot days, I like to eat salad because it can usually be prepared without using any heat and my flat stays nice and cool. Many different cultures and families around the world eat different types of salad and there is no right or wrong way to make a salad!

Watch this funny video of children making a salad.

Task: Make a salad.

It can be any type of salad you like. It might be something fancy or it might be something simple but the important thing is to make most of it yourself (you might want to ask your family members for some help).

If you like, you can send me a video or photo of you making a salad at hhobbs@sfdprimary.co.uk  I will post the photos in the Independent Champions section of our Year 4 weekly page.

It is important to learn how to do things for yourself. This is called being INDEPENDENT. Learning to be more independent and do things for yourself helps you:

  • learn new things
  • build self-esteem and confidence
  • make good decisions
  • develop responsibility
  • feel important and like you belong
  • develop coordination
