We have finished learning all the sounds for Reception! Today we are going to practise blending and reading words in a sentence substitution activity. Read the sentence and then change some of the words to make a new sentence. Remember the sentence has to make sense.

Can you now use some objects such as grapes, lego or pebbles to share the amount equally? How many objects do you get in each group after you shared them?

Special Task

 

This week we are learning all about sharks. Today we are going to do a science experiment to help us find out how sharks float. When they're in the water, they don't sink all the way to the bottom of the sea. Sharks are buoyant which means that they float. They need to keep moving to help them stay buoyant.

A shark has oil inside their liver, this is one of the ways that helps it to float. Sharks rely on their really big oily liver to help them stay buoyant in the water.

To do the experiment you will need:

- 2 empty bottles or 2 empty bags/balloons that can be sealed

- 1 big tub filled with water (you could use a sink)

- Some vegetable oil

- Some water

- Optional: 2 pictures of a shark (or a marker to draw sharks on the bottles)

 

Method

1. Fill each bottle equally with water and oil. 

2. Fill a tub or sink with water.

3. Draw sharks onto your bottles.

4. Talk about what you think might happen? Which one will sink or float?

5. Put the two bottles into the water and watch what happens!

 

The oil filled bottle floats! This is exactly what the oil filled liver of the shark does. Oil is lighter that water which is why the water bottle sunk.
