 Hello Year 5 and welcome back to Sir Francis Drake for Summer! 

We have a very exciting term ahead with lots of fun, exciting learning!

Below is the Year 5 overview of what we will be learning this term, our topic is 'Britain in the 1950s' and we have lots of great learning opportunities planned. 


Homework will be posted on Google Classroom every Friday afternoon. If you have any questions you can always leave a message on Google Classroom.

Homework needs to be submitted by the following Wednesday.

Our spelling test is every Friday.

In addition, make sure you: 

  • Read for at least 20 minutes per day.
  • Practise your times tables on 'Hit the Button' or TT Rockstars every day:
  • TT Rockstars
  • Hit the Button
  • Practise your spelling words every day. You could write each word into a sentence or make up a fun story with the words in. 

You could also:

  • Find the meaning of at least 5 new words in whatever book/ text/ comic you are reading! 
  • Practise your keyboard skills: Dance Mat Typing

In Maths, we have been focusing on fractions. This week we have been adding fractions with the same and different denominators.

In writing, we are looking at the book 'Cosmic' by Frank Cottrell-Boyce. The story is about a boy who is very, very tall - some people even think he's a grown up! The children will use their writing skills to write their own adventure based on the story.

We are also reading 'Wonder' by R.J. Palacio. 


In Science, we are looking at Earth and space. We will be learning more about our solar system and the movement of the Earth and other planets relative to the Sun, as well as the movement of the Moon relative to Earth. Here are some links where you can learn more:
