Safeguarding and Child Protection

Keeping children safe in education

Sir Francis Drake Primary School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all its pupils. Strict child protection and recruitment procedures operate and all appointments are subject to satisfactory references and enhanced checks from the Disclosure and Barring Service. All staff (including premises and lunchtime staff) are kept up to date with the latest updates from 'Keeping Children Safe In Education' and receive training throughout the year and on appointment. The most recent update refers to peer on peer abuse, and Child Sexual Exploitation. All staff have completed training in September 2018 to learn about this. Recently there have been important updates to the safeguarding duties for schools, including the statutory duty to report Honour based Violence (HBV), Female Genital Mutilation (FGM),Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE), Radicalisation (through PREVENT).

If an adult has a concern about any aspect of the welfare or well-being of a child they should inform a Designated Safeguarding Lead and record it as a concern.

Everyone should listen; a child will disclose to a person who they trust. As a staff team we are confident in recognising, referring, responding and recording safeguarding incidents.

The Designated Safeguarding Leads at Sir Francis Drake Primary School are:

Headteacher                                                   Deputy Headteacher

Christine Barnes                                                 Una Murtagh

Safeguarding Policy

Sir Francis Drake Primary School has adopted the definition of the term 'Safeguarding' used in the Children Act 2004.

In summary this is:

  • protecting children from maltreatment;
  • preventing impairment of children's health or development;
  • ensuring that children are growing up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care; and
  • undertaking that role so as to enable those children to have optimum life chances and to enter adulthood successfully.
