Story Writing - Synonyms and Antonyms

Synonyms are words with the same or similar meanings and antonyms are words with opposite meanings that are useful for descriptive story writing.

Watch this clip for a quick reminder of antonyms and synonyms.

Why are antonyms and synonyms useful?

Antonyms and synonyms are especially useful for story writing (narrative) as they help a writer to:

  • Describe and explain in a way that creates a clear image in the reader’s mind.
  • Avoid repetition so your writing doesn’t become boring.

Two words are synonyms if their meanings are the same or similar.

Words such as:

  • rapid OR fast
  • road OR motorway
  • travel OR move

Two words are antonyms if their meanings are opposite.

Words such as:

  • fast OR slow
  • carefully OR carelessly

You can use a thesaurus to find synonyms and antonyms for words.

Watch these video clips to understand what synonyms and antonyms are in more detail.

What makes a good computer game?

There are computer games for all age ranges and interests. You can play games on lots of devices including mobile phones, tablets, computers and consoles.

All games come from a basic idea that is then developed into a game.

Anyone can make a computer game.

Watch this short filme to see a Year 6 class use the Scratch visual programming to create their own computer game.

Designing Games

All games come from a basic idea that is then developed into a game.

So the first thing to do is come up with the idea for your game.

You could start with anything - a pirate looking for lost treasure, a vet caring for animals on a safari park or a spaceship captain exploring an alien galaxy.

Watch this clip to learn about some important aspects of games design.

Creating a Character

Computer games need to have stories with interesting characters in them or people won’t want to play them.

Every story has a character to cheer for. They don’t need to be living things either. Anything that has a personality can be a character.

One of the first computer game characters wasn't a human or an animal.

Watch this clip to find out how a pizza inspired Toru Iwatani to create Pac-Man.

Activity 2

Use your coding skills and learn about code cracking in World War Two in this activity on code breaking!

If you  have the task below and sent it to me there is no need  for you to do it again.
Before the break I was busy completing the paper work for your transfer to secondary school but there were some questions I could not answer because they are questions about you guys personally. Obviously, had we been in school I could have just asked you directly but circumstances being what they are that just isn't possible at the moment. I would like you to please open the file here and answer the questions on the sheet. There are only four questions and it shouldn't take you yoo long, but it would be a massive help to me in completing your paper work.

Have a fantastic weekend everyone, and I'll talk to you next week.
